The “Spirit filled” life is where we experience our relationship with God in our present life! If we are not walking in the Spirit, we live our Christian life without any verification of our salvation other than the knowledge of our trusting Christ when we were saved! Many people say, “if I could just walk with God, the way the disciples did, that would really help me live the Christian life!” The fact of the matter is this; when we accept Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have the Holy Spirit with us on a continual basis! I raise a few questions below that the answers help shed light on this issue!
1 John 4:13 (ESV)
13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
1.) What does it mean to walk in the Spirit? It does not mean we are directed, rather it means that we are led! It means that we are surrendered, trusting and dependent! How can we expect God to lead us when we live a life that He is not in charge of? We hear His word and we obey His word!
Galatians 5:16 (ESV)
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Galatians 5:25 (ESV)
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
2.) Is knowing God’s will for your life more interesting than living God’s plan for a Holy life? Many people love to think about discovering God’s will for their life, as so I! This question points out an essential fact though. That is, we will never find that answer if we are unwilling to live a surrendered life to the cause of Christ. God is in charge and He has a plan for each of us when we surrender to Him. It is only then, that by following Him we will discover what His will is! In fact, this may even be too frightening for some to even consider. Notice in Galatians 5:16 above where the bible states the fact that when we are under control of the Holy Spirit, we are not concerned about things that lead us astray.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
3.)Once we are saved, do you believe you are no longer a slave to sin? It is true, before we became a Christian, we were in bondage to sin. It is also true that now that we have the Holy Spirit guiding us and we have been spiritually made alive, we are no longer under control of sin!
Colossians 3:2-3 (ESV)
2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
4.) Are you ready to be serious about living the Christian life? If you are ready to be guided by God’s Spirit and are serious about experiencing victory and an ongoing knowledge of the relationship that we have with our God, it is time to get serious about discovering His truth in His word. His word will tell you who you are now, and the Holy Spirit uses His word to guide us, but you must be ready to obey. Take a look at the next scripture. It gives us the answer we need to help us understand this!
2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (ESV)
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
The answer is “we take the fleshly thoughts captive”! When we give our lives to the control of the Holy Spirit and God’s word, the Spirit identifies the thoughts that lead us to destruction and defeat! We simply need to recognize them and destroy them!
Once we become a Christian, we are made free from sin. We have the Holy Spirit reminding us, constantly, of the things that hurt us. We have the power, through Jesus Christ and a spirit that is now alive guided by God’s Spirit through His word that guides us in ways that help us to live a victorious life! A life that is in his plan. This occurs as we walk in the Spirit and trust God moment by moment in our lives!
